OVERVIEW OF ISO 22000 & HACCP: ISO 22000 is a generic Food Safety Management System (FSMS) standard. It is designed for the use of certification or registration purposes that specified to meet ISO’s requirement regarding food safety products. Through the establishment and implementation of this system, it shows that your company is making an effort to make sure that your food products do not cause adverse health effect to human. ISO 22000 is applied to all organizations in the food chain. The food chain process commonly involved quite a number of operations either directly or indirectly in the food industry. Direct operations include every step from initial production to final consumption such as production, processing, distribution, storage or even handling of all food and food ingredients. Meanwhile, food organizations that indirectly involve in the food production are like organizations that produce feed for animals that produce food and for animals that will be used as food or for organization that produce materials that will eventually come into contact with food or food ingredients. ISO 22000 combines Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), with both the Prerequisite Program (PRP) and the Operational Prerequisite Program (OPRP), to form an integrated Food Safety Management System (FSMS). PRP ensures a hygienic environment in the food chain and OPRP on the other hand minimises the probability of exposure of either the product or the product environment to hazards and contamination. Even though it is not mandatory for you to get certification to comply and consider food safety requirements as you can be in compliance without being formally registered by an accredited auditor, it is more convincing to your business partners and customers to believe that you have an effective FSMS if an independent auditor says so.
